RCMP musical ride coming

The iconic RCMP musical ride is coming to the Similkameen Valley this year.

A pair of shows will take place at the Princeton Exhibition Grounds Aug. 11-12, part of the ride’s tour through B.C. and Ontario in 2018.

The top RCMP officer in Princeton, Sgt. Barry Kennedy, has a personal connection to the ride and was a full-time member for four years between 1997 and 2001.

“It was a great experience. There was change in perception from how people viewed you,” Kennedy said, referring the the near-celebrity status members are given by the communities they visit.

“Everybody wanted to talk to the police, see the policeman and watch the show. It was fantastic.”

Kennedy says he approached the Princeton Legion to see if they would be interested in hosting the ride and they jumped on board.

“There is a lot of work that they have to do to ensure that the show is a success,” Kennedy said, noting the logistics required of a show that travels across the country with 36 horses.

The August events will also serve as fundraisers for the Legion and other community groups.

“We are hoping to have more details in the spring,” he said. “I’m quite excited that they’ve chosen to come to Princeton.”

Kennedy said he’s unsure what other B.C. communities have been selected for a tour stop this year.
