The Lower Similkameen Indian Band is looking forward to negotiations about a national park reserve proposed for the South Okanagan.
In a statement released Wednesday, LSIB Chief Keith Crow said his First Nation is willing to work with the federal and provincial governments and Osoyoos and Penticton Indian Bands.
“Any decision concerning a National Park Reserve will impact our people for generations, including our title lands, way of life, and continued ability to fulfill our responsibilities,” Crow said “This discussion is not solely about creating a park – it is about the future of smÉ™lqmix people, lands, and waters”.
The First Nation says it expects the Okanagan First People’s traditional decision making mechanisms to be upheld.
“Planning discussions will commence once Parks Canada has jointly established a government to government pathway with the LSIB,” the statement continues.
The LSIB’s position on the creation of a nation park reserve will be defined during negotiations.
