Lakeshore parking stays free

Parking will remain free along the Okanagan lakeshore, but motorists along a large portion of it will be required to move their vehicle every three hours.

Penticton city council approved a series of changes to downtown parking Tuesday that will aim to better utilize the nearly 4,000 parking stalls within a 10 minute walk of downtown.

Three-hour parking will be put in place on Lakeshore Dr. between Winnipeg and Power St. between the months of June and September.

City staff suggested the three-hour parking to push downtown employees off Lakeshore Dr. and into the parking lot at the north end of Martin St., which is being converted from hourly to reserved parking outside the tourism season.

Director of development services Anthony Haddad says there are currently 180 people on waitlists for city-owned monthly parking lots.

In addition to the 70-stall Martin St. lot, council approved the creation of another 43 monthly stalls along Westminster Ave. E and on White Ave.

All parking on Lakeshore Dr. west of Power St. will remain without restrictions, giving beach goers a chance to park for a full day.

Couns. Tarik Sayeed and Campbell Watt voted against the motion, voicing support for a four-hour parking window along Lakeshore Dr. instead of three. Coun. Andre Martin was also opposed, saying three different sets of parking rules along Lakeshore Dr. would be too confusing for the public.

More than two-thirds of the community told the city during public consultation they believed parking along the Okanagan lakeshore should be free.
