With snow falling on the mountains, that smoke you see coming from woods surrounding the Okanagan Valley is likely just seasonal slash burning.
Castanet News has received multiple inquiries today from readers wondering about the source of smoke in the hills around the South Okanagan.
An active burn on Greyback Mountain in Penticton has created quite the stir on social media, but Naramata Fire Chief Tony Travao confirmed the fire is under control.
Fire information officer Ryan Turcott says open burns are underway all over the province. In the Okanagan, forestry and agricultural operations are undertaking an annual purge of wood waste.
“Given how intense this fire season was, it's fair to say that the timelines got pushed back a bit in terms of whenever everyone is able to do their slash burning,” Turcott said.
The City of Penticton pushed the start of its open burning season back two weeks into November to allow things to fully cool down.
Turcott added wildfires this time of year are not impossible, but those that are concerned about smoke should check the province’s map of registered burn locations before reporting a wildfire.
