Local biz urged to recycle

Chantelle Deacon

Businesses in the South Okanagan haven't been doing their part when it comes to recycling paper, plastic and other materials, according to the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.

The RDOS is now working to implement new regulations and programs to reduce carbon and take pressure off the landfills.

GreenStep Solutions is working with the district to create a database of haulers in the area, and what those haulers will collect.

"That way, businesses have a one stop place that they can go, to help them figure out what they can do next with their recyclables,” said CEO Angela Nagy.

The RDOS has also been gathering feedback from businesses to understand the barriers to recycling. They have heard about confusion around what is recyclable, high costs and lack of service.

Solid waste management coordinator Cameron Baughen says they are looking for new options to help the business community go green.

"Be it help with collection, help with type of bins that they can have on their property, looking at different options that we do at the landfill to make it easier for commercial groups as well,” he said.

Businesses in the South Okanagan are being urged to take an online survey where they can voice their concerns about business recycling and composting.

"Once we collect all the feedback, we will be looking at what types of programs and education campaigns can be developed to help improve the rate of recycling amongst the business community and the multi-family homes,” Nagy said.
