Open burning delayed

The City of Penticton is delaying open burning season in the city.

The city typically starts issuing permits for category two and three agricultural and slash fires on Oct. 15. But this year, that opening will be delayed until November due to the still-high wildfire risk.

The delay applies only to agricultural burning. Campfires, gas and briquettes are permitted.

“The Penticton Fire Department would like to remind residents of the high wildfire risk due to minimal precipitation,” Fire Chief Larry Watkinson said in a news release.

The Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen declared that the open burning ban will be rescinded at noon on Sunday for fire protection areas administered by the RDOS.

Those areas include Naramata, Kaleden, Okanagan Falls, Willowbrook and Tulameen.
