Developer: Get on with it

The developer behind a controversial seniors development in Summerland is pushing district council to get on with it, and schedule a public hearing for their project.

In a letter to council dated July 12, project manager Malek Tawashy asked the hearing be scheduled within 10 days of Monday’s council meeting, where the Lark Group will be making a presentation.

The project is now pegged at 404-units, according to promotional materials the developer is distributing within the community.

A district staff report is recommending council hold off on a public hearing and wait for several studies and reviews to complete, listing nine items still under review.

The same report notes that the developers 10 day timeline is also impossible under the Local Government Act, which requires a certain level of public notification.

Additionally, a venue larger than council chambers, on a special date, would likely need to be booked.

The Lark Group is engaged in a campaign to drum up support from the public and business community. Form-letters touting the $125M capital investment and 75-100 permanent jobs are being distributed to counterbalance nearly 1,900 written signatures from Summerland residents opposed to the project.

Council will debate the request for a public hearing during Monday’s meeting at 7 p.m.
