Highland's days numbered

The City of Penticton says the Highland Motel’s days are numbered, and nearby residents won’t need to worry about the building much longer.

Development services manager Blake Laven says the developer is currently undertaking required environmental assessment work prior to applying for a demolition permit.

Although City Hall has no formal proposal for what will eventually be built on the property, Laven said the city has been in discussions with the developer for about four months now.

“That motel is not going to be there much longer,” Laven said.

He anticipates both a demolition permit application and land use application is “imminent.”

The motel burst into flames on June 30, eviction day for the tenants who remained after it had been sold two months earlier. The fire originated in a unit where a meth lab was found.
