Cameras on local buses

Buses in Penticton are starting to get security cameras installed as part of a provincial initiative.

Phased installation has begun for CCTV cameras on 10 BC Transit buses in the city, with all medium- and heavy-duty buses bought after 2005 to be fitted with cameras. New buses of at least 27 feet will come with cameras already installed.

The province-wide program comes after a one-year evaluation program finished in April last year. That saw 83 buses in Victoria and 25 in Kamloops fitted with cameras, which reportedly had positive results.

Since the evaluation program, cameras have been installed on buses in Kamloops, Victoria, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Chilliwack and Whistler.

Installing the cameras is expected to cost $36,400. The federal and provincial governments in June and July 2016 announced funding, which would leave 17 per cent of the cost to local governments.

It's not clear when the installations are expected to be finished.
