Diabetic driver hits barrier

A senior citizen had a diabetic episode while behind the wheel on Highway 97 last week.

The Penticton RCMP was called on March 17 at 9:40 pm. about an erratic driver travelling down the highway near Kaleden. By the time officers arrived, a red 2013 Hyundai Elantra had struck a concrete barrier on Waterman's Hill and was blocking traffic.

Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth said the driver, who was diabetic and in his seventies, was transported to hospital via ambulance where it was confirmed that he had suffered a diabetic incident that led to the collision.

“If someone is diabetic, many of the signs and symptoms are very similar to impaired driving,” Wrigglesworth said.

“There were no charges, and he had no injuries as a result of the accident thankfully,” he added.
