Repeat bike thief released

A man who admitted to stealing multiple high-end bicycles and a car was released on time-served Monday in Penticton court.

Jason Lance pleaded guilty to a list of 10 counts for property theft, possession of narcotics, driving while prohibited and breach of probation, connected to five incidents in Penticton, West Kelowna and Kelowna.

On Oct. 15, 2015, a West Kelowna resident who purchases and salvages ICBC writes-offs called police to report a Pontiac Vibe had been stolen. The resident actually spotted his car, which had unique damage to it, at a gas station and confronted the driver, who identified himself as Lance. He told the man “a sob story,” about being on hard times and promised to fix the damage to the car’s ignition.

The resident told Lance to return the car to the street outside the compound from where it was stolen, but when he returned at the end of the day, the car was not there as promised. The owner then reported it stolen, but it was returned to the compound sometime on Oct. 17.

Twice in Penticton in 2016, Lance was arrested in possession of stolen high-end mountain bikes, methamphetamine and heroin. He was also arrested with break-in tools a third time after fleeing from police when was stopped while riding his bike carrying what officers suspected was stolen property.

Then in Jan. 2017, Lance was found unconscious in the parking lot of Kelowna City Hall at about 2:25 a.m. After being woken up, he was found in possession of narcotics and in breach of his bail conditions and arrested.

With proposed sentences of 14 to 30 days for each offence, the prosecution and defence agreed that Lance was likely to be released following sentencing. He had been in custody for 140 days total, good for 210 days worth of credit.

Justice Gale Sinclair sentenced him to 209 days and released him with one year probation. He declined to include a curfew in his probation conditions as suggested by the crown, because Lance told the court he was going to work in Alberta with his father.
