Promoting local artists

Saturday's mixed bag of weather didn't stop people from coming out to support the arts community in Penticton.

Many stopped by the Spring Thing Arts and Crafts Show at the Leir house, held by the Penticton Arts Council.

"It is benefitting artists in the community as well as raising some funds for the Penticton Arts Council , because we are a nonprofit organization," said executive director Vaelei Walkden-Brown. "And I like the Leir House being used for this type of thing as it brings attention to it and creates a nice, warm community feeling with live music, food and lots of crafts."

This is the second craft show put on by the council since Walkden-Brown came on board. The first was in December of 2016, with both being organized by council vice president Laurel Burnham.

On Saturday, visitors checked out a little bit of everything from original art pieces to prints, jewelry, pottery and handbags, even gluten free pasta and organic dog food.

Melissa Fowler, an Oliver artist who does hand painted signs, said it was a nice environment to show off her artwork.

"We are too commercialized as a community," she said. "So it's nice to see local artists display their wares."

Jason Bieber, a Summerland artist and owner of Kingfisher Craft Company, had his screen print T-shirts, all natural soaps and handmade greeting cards and other items on display.

"This allows you to interact with people and share your passions with them," he said. "And it's good to connect  with people who appreciate local handmade products and artists."

While Sharon Lawrence, a Penticton artist who creates bags and purses using unique fabric and a lot of rescued items, said it's good for people to see the creativity that exists in this town.

The spring thing continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The council also recently announced the launch of an inaugural annual arts festival, Artsrising Penticton to take place in September.

There will be an information night  on the festival at 7 p.m., Monday, March 20 at the Leir House at 220 Manor Park Avenue.
