Drug counselling for seniors

Pathways Addiction Resource Centre in Penticton is launching a new program on substance use for seniors.

The Older Adults Sharing Information on Substance use (OASIS) program is designed to help older adults and their caregivers in the South Okanagan. It will provide education and counselling to encourage healthy lifestyles and minimize the risk of substance use and medication misuses.

"When researching this project it was estimated that nine out of ten older adults take their prescriptions improperly or not at all," says Daryl Meyers Agency Director at Pathways,

"Medication misuse in older adults can cause cognitive and physical impairment. The older generation is also more likely to experience self-stigmatization, meaning they are less likely to seek help. OASIS is uniquely tailored to build on older adults’ strengths, maximize their potential and optimize physical wellness."

The program is funded in part by a $100,000 grant from the Community Action Initiative and will be run in partnership with the Division of Family Practice, Interior Health and the “Better at Home” program with Penticton and District Community Resources.
