$1.7M more to policing

A potential increase of RCMP officers to the Penticton detachment would be based on the crime rate and crime reduction, according to a budget presentation at City Hall.

Staff Sgt. Kirsten Marshall, detachment finance manager Sandra Idzes and the incoming top cop Insp. Ted De Jager presented to council Tuesday afternoon their proposed budget for the next five years.

That budget included a gradual increase of $1.7 million in costs to the city over the course of five years to a projected $10 million in 2021.

A large portion of that projected increase comes from the policing agreement, which is looking at a $1.6-million increase. That would be due, in part, to a potential addition of staff to the detachment, including four officers.

“One in particular would be in our identification section,” Idzes said.

“Our member complement has been steady since 2007. There’s definitely pressure in the first position, which is an identification position, and then a forecast further for augmenting some of our sections based on crime rate and crime reduction.”

Idzes says the projected increase is still uncertain, and is largely for planning purposes at this time.
