Clubs adopting families

Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs in Penticton, Summerland, Oliver and Osoyoos are ready to make memories this holiday season.

For a third year in a row, the clubs are running the Adopt a Family Christmas Hamper program, giving families and youth in need the chance to have a complete Christmas with food and presents.

"This may not seem like a monumental gift, but for families struggling financially, the costs of Christmas can be stressful. Food security is a major issue in our valley," said infant development program coordinator Jennifer Fox. “Many parents struggle to do their best for their children, but can find themselves feeling helpless when their best is not enough."

The Oliver/Osoyoos Club is supporting 25 families and two young people this year.

The young people are living by themselves on youth agreements.

Cheques from youth agreements generally cover essential expenses, leaving many young people with a highly restricted budget.

The Penticton club is supporting 24 families and six youth who live independently this year.

These families are located in Summerland, Penticton and Keremeos.

“My family will have memories of a good Christmas," said one parent. "I want my son to think everything is OK and that we are not struggling."

The clubs are also grateful for the proactive involvement of the community.

“Community partners directly contribute to the happy holiday memories of families and youth in the South Okanagan," said CEO Diane Entwistle. "Together with Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, community partners are making the holiday season a little brighter."

The hampers will be delivered in the days ahead.
