Kidnapping guilty plea

One of four men involved in a high-profile Penticton kidnapping case entered a surprise guilty plea in court this week.

Albert Edgar Fontaine, 40, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping and one count of using an imitation firearm to commit an indictable offence.

A publication ban applicable to the circumstances of the offences has also been put in place so as not to taint the jury pool for the other three men facing charges in the offence.

The three are set to go on trial next year in B.C. Supreme Court in Penticton.

The decision to go to trial was made following a brief preliminary inquiry with a heavy security presence, in August.

The men are facing charges including kidnapping, aggravated assault and unlawful confinement or imprisonment, stemming from an incident on May 21, 2015.

According to earlier RCMP reports, a Penticton man was kidnapped and seriously assaulted during the incident.

The victim was found by a motorist in a ditch on Shingle Creek Road with a broken leg and restraints on his hands.
