Supporting hungry kids

A breakfast program serving hundreds of children at School District 67 schools is getting another boost on Saturday.

Community groups are holding a fundraiser at the Vees game to support the program.

"I really appreciate any community partnerships," said Susan Thomson, director of instruction for student services. "Without that nutrition some of our students would be hungry."

The program is open to all students in the school district.

When they arrive in the morning they provided a nutritious breakfast by community volunteers.

"Whenever I'm in the building in the morning there's a number of children and I think the need is always there," said Thomson.

Among those involved are the Speedway Foundation, and community members Trevor Nelson and Marg Bjornson.

Nelson said he's helped out for the past two years because it's something extremely important for young children.

"I think there are just families that could use this assistance in the community," he said.

On Saturday leadership students from Princess Margaret Secondary School, will be selling raffle tickets to win a 2003 Nissan Altima at the Vees game, with all the funds raised going to the breakfast program.
