Getting that Christmas shopping done downtown Penticton will be a little bit easier this weekend.
City council has approved a request from the Downtown Penticton Association that will see all metered parking stalls in the downtown core free on every Saturday for the month of December. Councillors were so enthused with idea they unanimously signed off on the plan for 2017 as well.
“Providing complimentary parking will increase traffic downtown to not only shop, but to enjoy restaurants and entertainment throughout the holiday season,” DPA executive director Lynn Allin wrote in her request to council.
The free parking will only apply to city owned stalls, and private lot rules still apply.
Staff expects the move to cost Penticton about $5,000.
