Winery sunny side up

A South Okanagan winery is using the sun for more than just growing grapes.

Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery in Oliver is showing off Saturday the newly installed solar array on its roof.

The event also celebrates their 30th anniversary.

"This is first of all for people to see the newest technology in solar panels that can also be used for residential and to meet with people who have already installed solar on their roof to hear about their experiences," said Susan Huber, co owner of Swiss Solar Tech Ltd. in Summerland, who did the installation.

Huber said they are introducing the latest technology of bi-facial solar modules, which boost energy production up to 25 per cent through the use of cutting edge and highly-efficient duo cells.

The bi-facial cells convert sunlight into power not only from the front of the module but from the back, as well.

Representatives from other wineries and businesses have been invited to attend, as well as MLA Linda Larson.

There will also be a draw for prizes including two solar PV modules, one solar PV module, wine and Swiss chocolate and wine.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the winery at 876 Road #8 in Oliver.
