Payphone case adjourned

The trial for a man who allegedly smashed into a Coalmont phone booth with his car while another man was inside the booth has been pushed back.

Roland Giroux faces charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm, which was scheduled to go to trial for Nov. 21.

But defence lawyer James Pennington asked for the trial to be adjourned, as he was hoping to speak to experts about the case.

The adjournment was approved, and lawyers on the case will be returning to the court on Nov. 21 to set a new date.

Roland Giroux originally faced an attempted murder charge in what Princeton RCMP described as a "bizarre" incident in March 2015.

"It looks like he drove by the phone booth, recognized the guy in the phone booth, turned his car around, lined it up and drove through the phone booth," Sgt. Barry Kennedy of the Princeton RCMP said at the time of the incident.

Warren Spence reportedly escaped the booth just in time, but did suffer an injury to his leg in the incident.

After he was unable to restart his car, Giroux allegedly began chasing Spence with a baseball bat.

"According to witnesses, after he ran over the victim, he apparently yelled at the guy that he was going to finish him off," Kennedy said.
