Owl centre needs boost

The South Okanagan Rehabilitation Centre for Owls, SORCO, is reaching out to the community for help after a very busy year.

The centre in the Oliver area typically holds one big fundraiser, an open house in May, but this year is planning one for November as well, due to financial needs.

"What happened this year is we got in more than 40 raptor chicks that need rehabilitation and we were feeding them 500 pieces of food per week," said manager Dale Belvedere. "So we couldn't keep up with that and now we are financially strapped."

In 2015, the centre, which is dedicated to rehabilitating injured birds of prey for release back into the wild, also experienced a break-in where the raptors' food supply was poisoned, creating more hardships.

To help out, SORCO is urging community members to attend the newly added event on Nov. 20 at 4:30 p.m. at the Okanagan Falls Hotel and Pub.

It will include a roast beef dinner, raffles and a 50/50.

For more information call 250-498-4251 or visit the SORCO website.
