Helping refugees in Greece

Lesley Vaisanen spent six weeks helping refugees on the Island of Lesbos in Greece. Located in the northern Aegean Sea off the coast of Turkey, Lesbos is the main refugee
gateway to Europe.

Vaisanen spent time fund raising to bring much needed supplies to Greece. In January 2016 leaving her family back in Canada, she flew to Greece to help refugees coming from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

She encountered many objections to her desire to travel across the world to help people in need. During her presentation she will describe why she felt compelled to go, and what she encountered on the Island of Lesbos.

Lesley Vaisanen lives in Summerland with her husband and children. The desire to serve people in need is something she has always been driven by. Traveling to Greece was the first step towards fulfilling her desire.

She is now working towards becoming a registered nurse.

The presentation, part of the Brown Bag Lecture Series, will be from noon to 1 p.m., Oct. 25, in the museum auditorium.

It is just one of the many lectures held every Tuesday in the fall and spring at the museum.

Admission is by donation.

Suggested donation is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
