Nearly $9,000 for OSNS

The Okanagan Similkameen Neurological Society Child and Youth Development Centre has recently received two donations totalling nearly $9,000.

The OSNS, which works to help encourage the development of children up to the age of 16, received a $1,100 donation from the Eagles Ladies Auxilliary #4281, which has been earmarked for repairs and upgrades to the Kinderplace outdoor learning area.

The OSNS says the group has been longtime supporters of the organization

The outdoor learning area is used by hundreds of children year-round to inspire creativity and promote motor skills. First built in 1996, it will see the addition of natural play elements.

“We’ve been strong supporters of OSNS and the children of our community for decades and are happy to help provide funding for equipment,” said Helen Little of the Eagles Ladies Auxillary in a news release.

On top of that donation, the board of directors of the First West Foundation also donated $7,500 to the OSNS, to play a role in creating the Valley First Teaching Kitchen.

OSNS is looking to turn its existing kitchen into a food an nutrition teaching space for children and families.

The program will run in co-operation with our Learning and Sharing Garden and will include teaching about healthy food choices in light of the food sensitivities and texture preferences of many children with developmental challenges.

That will be an activity-based teaching program that will allow families to practice nutritious food preparation in co-operation with their children.

The intent is for children to establish early positive relationships with nutritious foods.

“We’re very excited to partner with an organization that has such a holistic approach to children’s health and wellbeing,” said First West Foundation executive director Seline Kutan.

“Having the capacity to teach not only the parents but the whole family in the new Valley First Teaching Kitchen goes a long way to establishing positive relationships with nutritious food.”
