Catch and release for bear

A bear was captured by conservation officers Wednesday morning at a trucking company in Penticton.

Officer Dave Cox said two officers successfully caught the animal at about 8:30 a.m. at Berry & Smith Trucking Ltd. on Warren Avenue E.

"We viewed sighting and response over the last week to determine the level of conflict, which essentially determines the outcome for the bear," said Cox. "Fortunately in this case there was a low level of conflict and there was a determination this bear was a suitable candidate for a short distance re-location."

The incident follows reports of a bear sighting in the vicinity of Skaha Lake Middle School and Princess Margaret Secondary School on Tuesday.

Cox said the bear found on Wednesday was very likely the same animal based on the location.

He further advised that this bear will likely return and it is extremely important for people to manage all their attractants because it's Penticton residents who will determine the bear's fate.

People are asked to call 1-877-952-7277 to report any bear conflict or sightings.
