Racetrack paving underway

After three years of planning, the day for paving arrived this week at the Area 27 race track near Oliver.

On Wednesday, workers from Peters Bros. paving put the first asphalt down past Turn 2, through to Turn 7.

After breaking ground in December and commencing earthworks in February, crews are using an on-site asphalt plant to provide the material.

This is no typical paving job, and many of the usual guidelines don't apply.

Where the paver driver usually relies on sonic sensors and automatic levelling to keep the asphalt at the same thickness, many parts of the circuit require manual adjustments and a trained eye, say organizers.

The 4.9-kilometre track is the dream of Area 27 president and co-founder Bill Drossos, a former race car driver.

It's taking shape on Manuel Flats on the outskirts of town, on land owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band.

It was designed by Canadian racing legend Jacques Villeneuve to capture the essence of the classic Grand Prix track and captivate, challenge and reward drivers of all skill levels.

A grand opening is scheduled for spring 2017.
