Perfect day for a spin

Although it may not be common knowledge, Friday is Vinyl Record Day.

To mark the day, locally, London Drugs in Penticton held an event in conjunction with the Penticton Pistoleras, the local roller derby team.

"It's fun to have a day recognizing vinyl records, and all the records in the store are 15 per cent off during the store hours until 9 p.m.," said Vicki Scott, the audio video department manager at the store.

The celebration traditionally takes place on Aug. 12, the date when Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877.

At London Drugs at the Cherry Lane Shopping Centre they spent the day doing demonstrations on cleaning and maintaining a vinyl record collection as well as offering three separate listening sections set up throughout the store in the cosmetics department, in front of the store and in the audio video department.

The event was held in conjunction with a recruitment effort by the Penticton Pistoleras, the local roller derby team.

Team members were there to play some music, as well as do some recruiting and offer information about the South Okanagan Roller Derby Association.

"It brings attention to the records and to us as well, so it's a good mix," said team member Renee Lammerts.

Lammerts said at this time they are trying recruit women for the team and men to serve as referees and volunteers at their events.

If juniors are interested they are invited to come down and practice with the team with parental consent.
