Car show on long weekend

A car show that serves as a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Penticton-Okanagan’s local projects is taking place on the long weekend.

The club's 21st annual car show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday at Rotary Park.

"It's a super fun day in the park, wandering around magnificent vintage cars," said Sandra Henderson, who is on the car show committee. "It's family friendly and people get to have their own vote for people's choice."

Featured cars are from the Okanagan, other areas of BC, Alberta and Washington State.

This year’s show is dedicated to Dr. Eric Ruby, a long-standing and greatly respected member of the club and founder of the car show who was tragically killed in Mexico in March 2016.

Trophies awarded for vehicles are framed photos of scenes from bygone days in Penticton and around  the Okanagan.

They include the Dr. Eric Ruby Memorial trophy, the Ken Paton Memorial trophy, to honour a longtime friend of the Rotary Wheels Car Show, and People's Choice trophy selected by the public through a voting process.

There are also trophies for best in each of the eight designated vehicle classes chosen through peer voting by the owners of the cars on display.

Classes have been expanded upon during the 2015 car show.

Entertainment includes well known local musicians Cliff Brownlee and Brian Russell performing from noon until 1 p.m., Kyle Anderson from 1-3 p.m. and Penticton’s Gail Riddall will sing a few of her favourite songs too.

DJ, Frank Lyons will keep the tunes coming throughout the day

The park will be licensed so beer and cider may be enjoyed along with hot dogs, smokies,  BBQ beef buns, ice cream and other non alcoholic beverages.

The car show also serves as a fundraiser for the club's sponsorship of an award for a deserving student in the Okanagan College’s automotive program.

Vehicle owners can register online or request information through the car show website: www.pentictonrotarywheelscarshow.ca
