Motorcycle crashes decline

The South Okanagan saw a significant decline in motorcycle crashes in 2015, after two years of high numbers.

Last year, there was one fatal motorcycle crash and 28 injuries. The year previous, four people were killed and 39 injured.

RCMP noticed a trend of increasing motorcycle crashes in early 2015 and reached out to motorcycle shops in the region to put together an educational program to curb such incidents.

Reserve Const. Dave Cramm, a motorcycle instructor, conducted roadside safety talks with hundreds of motorcyclists through the summer, and a motorcycle skills demonstration was held in Penticton last spring.

Sgt. Harold Hallett, with South Okanagan Traffic Services, says police have received positive feedback for their efforts from motorcyclists in the area.

Between 2014 and 2015, fatalities in motorcycle crashes were reduced by 75 per cent, and overall crashes were reduced by 33 per cent.

As riding season begins in the next few months, police plan to continue encouraging motorcycle safety.
