Gone ice fishin'

The South Okanagan might be one of those places that B.C. residents and our neighbours see as a summertime only destination, but there are winter activity gems all over the region.

The BC Fishn’ Team is out to prove the South Okanagan is the perfect location for ice fishing, and not just fun in the sun.

The group of everyday anglers devote their time to the sport of fishing with conservation efforts first in mind.

Their mission is to introduce people to the sport of fishing and encourage the new generation to become connected with the outdoors. Recently a video produced by BC Fishn’ promotes several lakes around Osoyoos for ice fishing as well as giving some tips of the trade for the winter sport.

The team visited Yellow Lake, just 20 km southwest of Penticton off of Highway 3B, to film; the same spot where Ice Fish Day will be held on Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ice Fish Day is organized by the B.C. Wildlife Federation, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

The event is for all ages; however those 16 and over require a BC Freshwater Fishing License. Ice fishing gear and bait will be supplied, as well as a hot dog lunch.

Yellow Lake is stocked with Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout and Kokanne  by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.
