Fire chief for the day

Five Naramata Elementary School students were all smiles as they arrived at school in a fire engine, Friday morning.

The fun activity, known as "fire chief for the day," took place during Fire Prevention Week.

"It's just important for kids to know what the fire department does and how they work in the community and what they can do to be safe around fires," said principal Todd Lindsay.

The week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

There is a different theme each year, with this year's being "Hear the beep where you sleep. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm."

Friday activities in Naramata included the fire department picking up the kids at the start of the day and taking them home at the end. There was also a fire drill at 10 a.m., with the fire department there setting up as if there were a real fire.

Earlier in the week, Naramata kindergarten students visited the fire hall.

"It's good for the kids," said Fire Chief Tony Trovao. "They get to experience the duties of firefighters and the fire chief."
