Weird discs identified

Strange discs recently found in Manitou Park in Naramata have been identified as something made out of hawthorn berries by a resident.

Darren Rettie, chair of the Naramata Parks and Recreation Commission, said they are made using a special press and are believed to be nutritionally dense.

As for the reason they were left out, he has no idea.

"It still doesn't really answer the why, but at least it is the what," said Rettie.

Parks and maintenance contractor Jordan Taylor started finding the puck-like objects on cement barriers and around tree trunks on his morning sweeps.

There was initial concern, because they could attract wildlife, like bears, and the beach is frequented by families with children.

Meanwhile, Greg Pidwerbeski, a maintenance worker/guide at Myra Canyon Adventure Park, found one Thursday afternoon at the park.

"I was just going to set up a BBQ for guests and I saw it on the side of the road," he said. "My first thought was it was bear scat, but it looked too perfect."

He left it there and after seeing Thursday's story on Castanet, he retrieved it today and planned to stash it in a shed until he found out what it was.

"I've never seen anything like it before, other than a well done hamburger," he said. "It's a little concerning."

Now, it appears at least part of the mystery has been solved.
