Horse racing cancelled

Despite recent assurances the races were a go, horse racing at Desert Park in Osoyoos has been cancelled at the last minute this morning, because the race’s biggest stars can’t make it into Canada.

Due to the wildfires in Washington, the highways the American horses need to take to Osoyoos have been closed.

“All American horses are not able to make it through the border,” said Pete Hormes, race director. “There’s no way to reroute it, I can’t believe it.”

Hormes said approximately 90 per cent of the horses set to race this afternoon were coming from America.

“It’s hugely disappointing because people have invested so much time and money and effort,” said Hormes. “It’s a wonderful day out here, but on the American side it’s just way tougher."

While Hormes said he would like to reschedule today's event, he said it would be difficult.

“We’re trying to figure out a way if they can make it any other times, but they’re booked all year, so it’s really tough to try and reschedule them.”
