RCMP out in full force

A major RCMP road safety check is currently underway in the South Okanagan.

The roadside check kicked off at Highway 97 and Highway 3A Friday morning and is slated to last through the weekend.

"This is the beginning of the busy season," said Sgt. Harold Hallett, one of the officers on scene. "People have motorcycles out, boats out on the lake and RVS and ATVs, equipment that has sat all winter long."

The first priority over the weekend is motorcycles because of the crash picture. According to Hallett, there has been one motorcycle fatality and six serious injuries in the South Okanagan.

In addition, police are looking for mechanical deficiencies and drunk drivers.

Agencies at the location included the Penticton RCMP, South Okanagan Traffic Services and vehicle inspectors with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Alexa's bus, with a dispatcher on board,  was also there to process drunk drivers from beginning to end, without having to go to the detachment.

The bus, unveiled in Prince George in February, is named for Alexa Middelaer.

The little girl was hit by a drunk driver as she fed a horse by the side of the road in Delta in 2008.

"Our number one message this weekend is don't drink and drive and make sure your vehicle is in roadworthy condition," said Hallett.

The road safety check will be at the same location today and various locations over the weekend.
