Nude beach mussel at risk

Three Mile Beach was back on the Penticton council agenda this week, but this time it regarded a species at risk.

Council has agreed to enter into a stewardship agreement with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations for Three Mile Beach for the Rocky Mountain Ridged Mussel.

This species of mussel is listed as a "special concern" in Canada under the Species At Risk Act, and is found in along the shoreline of the beach.

Careful management of the species and its habitat is needed through planning, stewardship and threat mitigation.

This includes avoiding lakebed roto-tilling and dredging, in-filling or dumping material in the lake, hardening of the shoreline and placing structures in the water such as docks and launches.
