Opposition to day moorage

Retired Penticton resident Gerry Gilligan will hold a rally on the steps of City Hall, Monday, to show opposition to day moorage proposed in the SS Sicamous Master Plan.

Gilligan says it's not just him, but a lot of people, who are opposed to the idea of moorage on the rock groin in the vicinity.

"We don't think it's appropriate because it's a very beautiful spot, a natural wonder where we swim and kayak and see beaver and all kinds of birds," he said. "It's a lovely little spot, away from the activity on the rest of the beach."

What Gilligan fears most is that moorage will bring noise, air and water pollution.

His suggestion to the city is to put it somewhere else, such as at the Kiwanis walking pier.

He says the city has been encouraging such use at the location for a long time.

"Every time there's talk about it, people send letters to the editor," he said.

In reaction to the SS Sicamous Master Plan, they are talking about an actual physical dock, he added.

In recent months, he started circulating a petition, which now has 170 signatures opposing the moorage that is part of the plan.

The City Hall rally will take place at 5 p.m., Monday, prior to a public hearing.

Council was given a presentation on the comprehensive plan at its last meeting.

Mayor Andrew Jakubeit said he feels day moorage is something that council needs to address.

"We live on two lakes but have very few places for people to come in with their boats," he said. "But it is good the community is engaged and voicing concerns. We will be considering the matter at Monday's meeting."
