Koopmans' trial set to begin

The murder trial for John Ike Koopmans is set to begin Wednesday after more than a week of pre-trial matters in Penticton court.

Koopmans, 51, is accused of killing Princeton residents Robert Keith Wharton, 44 and Rosemary Fox, 32 on a rural property located on Old Hedley Road near Princeton in March 2013.

The trial was originally slated to begin Feb. 23 but has been pushed back to Feb. 25.

Koopmans pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and one of attempted murder. A second man, also found at the scene, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Twelve jurors and two alternates were selected on Monday and the rest of the week was spent in a Voir dire, a mini-hearing held within a trial, to determine which evidence will be admissible.

The Voir dire will continue through Tueday.

The trial was originally expected to last five weeks, but defence lawyer Don Skogstad suggested it may only take four.
