Event organizer sues DPA

A Penticton event organizer has filed a lawsuit against her former employer, claiming wrongful dismissal.

According to a court document obtained by Castanet, Laurel Burnham is suing the Downtown Penticton Association, where she previously worked as the community market manager.

According to the document, filed on Jan. 19, Burnham entered into a contract with the DPA about July 12, 2008, that included the following terms: she was to assist in the planning and implementation of the market and was to be paid 50 per cent of all vendor market fees.

In May of 2013, she was subsequently hired as the full-time manager of the market.

Burnham claims she diligently performed all duties on behalf of the DPA until her job was terminated on or about Oct. 20, 2014. The reason for this is not explained in the document. It simply states it was not for just cause.

Burnham, who is asking for $25,000 in damages, claims she has suffered stress, anxiety, humiliation, embarassment and financial distress as a result.

Burnham and the DPA could not immediately be reached for comment.
