Challenge won by local

UPDATE

Jeff Symonds is the champion of Challenge Penticton.

He also won last year and beat his previous record by three minutes.

Challenge Penticton filled the streets Sunday as hundreds of racers came out to compete.

This is the second year of Challenge Penticton after the Ironman competition left the city. Racers can do a full triathlon, a half triathlon, or break it up into a relay with team mates.

By 9:30 a.m. the temperature was in the low twenties with light cloud cover.

However, the water was so warm that the pro athletes were not allowed to wear wetsuits, they wore skin suits which have no insulation.

Penticton's Jeff Symonds has been in the lead all day and by 2:20 p.m. he was within 10 kilometres of the finish line and had an estimated 15 minute lead over the next racers.

Symonds just got 2nd place in Ironman Whistler four weeks ago.

Hundreds of volunteers also came out to direct traffic, hand out water and snacks and guide athletes along the way.
