Mill fire in Cawston

A fire at T L Timber on Hwy. 3 in Cawston earlier this evening may have been caused by lightning.

According to Jordy Bosscha, fire chief of the Keremeos Volunteer Fire Department, the strike sparked a fire in the holding lot of the log home business.

"Right now, we're unsure [what started it], but right now - lightning strike," he said. "Most of the logs that they lost are for log homes."

The blaze worked its way into the company's stockpile of logs, engulfing several rows of raw timber.

"We didn't hear thunder or anything," said one man who was on-site and helped fight the blaze. "Just looked over and saw the smoke."

The Keremeos fire department called in additional resources to help tame the inferno. Kelowna fire dispatch confirmed that a team from Osoyoos came in and a trucking firm helped to bring more water to the scene.

The crews were able to contain the fire to the logs, no buildings were damaged.

It started shortly after 6 p.m. and by 8 p.m. firefighters were mopping up.

There are no reports of injuries.

Bosscha said this was the third lightning strike in the area today, following one on a mountainside and another closer to Keremeos which ignited an old railway right of way on fire.
