Just over 500 residents in Keremeos were in the dark Wednesday morning as nest-building Ospreys managed to knock out the power.
“It is an interesting outage because what happened is there were Ospreys in the area that were starting to build a nest on power lines, which means they were just starting to drop sticks on to power lines and one of these sticks caused a power outage at about 8 a.m. Wednesday morning,” says Fortis BC spokesperson Grace Pickell.
She says when Fortis crews arrived on site they determined what was happening and decided to shut off an additional section of Keremeos in order to make sure the area was safe.
Crews were then able to clean up the sticks and return power.
Pickell says Fortis will look after the Osprey.
“We have a program in place to protect Osprey, because for obvious reasons, having a nest on power-lines isn’t safe for the birds or good for our system either,” said Pickell.
"We will look into building a pole with a nesting pad nearby so the Osprey have somewhere safe to build their nest.”
The power outage affected 520 customers in the Keremeos area along Hwy. 3A. Power was restored around 10:30 a.m.
