Two people have been taken to hospital with serious burns after a structure fire broke out at a home in Osoyoos Friday morning.
According to Glenn Braithwaite, operations supervisor for BC ambulance, they were called to the intersection of 87th Street and 92nd Avenue at around 9:30 a.m.
The two victims, a man and a woman were rescued by members of the Osoyoos Fire Department and taken to South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver.
Neighbours report they were concerned about the delay in getting ambulances to the scene. RCMP have confirmed that Osoyoos EMS were on another call at the time.
Fire crews believe the blaze may have started in the kitchen. FortisBC has also been called to the scene to deal with electrical issues.
An air ambulance will be flying the victims to another hospital where they can be better treated.
Neighbour Edgar Scheer said firefighters banged on his door around 9 a.m.
"They said get dressed and get out," he said. "The fire between their house and the fence was burning 20 feet high, and I saw her, she was lying down covered in blankets in front of my place. I saw her arm and face, and she looked rough. His face and arms were burned, and he was running around in his underwear."
They are nice people and good neighbors, so this is sad this happened, he added.
Another neighbour, who didn't give her name, said she was devastated and hoped they were OK.
Osoyoos Fire Chief Rick Jones said when he arrived on scene it was burning out the front, and the man and woman were outside in the front. They were both badly burned, with local residents looking after them. They were transported from the scene by BC Ambulance. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
