Sensible BC reaches goal in Penticton

After much pavement pounding and long days, Sensible BC has reached its goals in the Penticton and Boundary Similkameen districts.

Amanda Stewart, electoral riding coordinator for the districts, claims it was a small group of volunteers that really made the difference.

"The dedicated canvassers were awesome, with two or three hardcore canvassers in each area, who made you feel it was moving forward each day," she said.

The goal of the campaign, which started Sept. 9, is to have a referendum on the Sensible Policing Act, which would decriminalize cannabis possession in BC and start the province on the path to a legally regulated system.

They have until Dec. 9 to collect the signatures of 10 percent of registered voters in each of the province's 85 ridings. That adds up to 400,000 signatures.

The threshold of 10 percent for Penticton was 4,300 signatures, and they received around 5,000. In Boundary Similkameen, the goal was to get 2,800 signatures, and they got 3,300.

In addition, they got 800 signatures from people in other ridings, that will be forwarded to those ridings.

Stewart said getting the extra signatures is a good buffer, because there might be people who signed who were not registered voters.

She is excited that all the hard work paid off, but concerned that some ridings up north might not have made it.

Her understanding is that volunteers from the 11 ridings that are finished will go to areas where the goal still needs to be reached.

"There will be a flurry of activity in other ridings leading up to the deadline," she said.

Stewart is also encouraging people to still come in and sign the petition here in Penticton, for the buffer.

Here is a list of locations where people can sign:

Servicemaster, 2325 Government Street
