Grape stomping time in Oliver
Oct 3, 2013 / 5:57 am
It's time to stomp some grapes and celebrate the harvest this weekend.
The Festival of the Grape, slated to take place Sunday at the Oliver Community Centre, promises something for everyone, from grape stomping to lively music.
"It is an awesome way to spend a Sunday, and a great way to introduce people to the wineries of the Okanagan, including five or six new ones that have recently opened," said Bonnie Dancey, CEO of the South Okanagan Chamber of Commerce, which is presenting the event.
The festival was started in 1997 to promote the wine industry in the Oliver area.
The first year it attracted about 365 people, but has since grown in leaps and bounds.
Last year, around 3,500 showed up to enjoy the festivities.
Highlights this time around are the participation of 50 wineries, a very large children's venue with a petting zoo, the grape stomp, with teams coming from as far away as Alberta, food vendors and an indoor art show.
Entertainment will be provided by Rumba Calzada, billed as a Latin explosion featuring original and classic Latin jazz and salsa music.
Gates open at noon, and the wine tent opens at 1 p.m.
Tickets cost $23 in advance, $25 at the gate and children under 19 are free. Tickets are available at locations including the Firehall Bistro, (250) 498-4867, and the Oliver Visitor Centre, (250) 498-6321.
