Packing house loses footing
Oct 2, 2013 / 12:37 pm
The Regional District Okanagan Similkameen board will consider on Thursday approving a temporary use permit to crush concrete on the former site of the fruit packing house in Naramata.
The Okanagan Tree Fruits Cooperative, which owns the property, made the request for the permit, according to Karla Kozakevich, the Naramata director for the RDOS.
"They had a demolition permit when they tore it down," she said. "Since then they extended that permit and with that are doing the temporary use, because they would rather crush on site, than haul it away."
Kozakevich said work on the site, including getting rid of metal rebar and the uneven cement, is under consideration now because they didn't want it done in the summer, when it would have an impact on the community and tourism.
She has further asked that work be done be after the Thanksgiving weekend, because she was contacted by the nearby Naramata Heritage Inn, and told they would be booked up that weekend.
The work itself is proposed to take no longer than two weeks . According to the applicant that will entail a XR 400 crusher being set up on the site, a 980 loader feeding the crusher, a sprinkler system to deal with dust and the work being done from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
The old packing house was demolished in 2011, and the location has looked much the same since.
Kozakevich said people in the community consider the site to be an eyesore and have been asking for the past year when it will be cleaned up.
With the approval of the board Thursday, that clean up will start, she said.
"Once they get all of that out of there, it will be deemed safe, and the fence can come down," she said. "There are parties ... who have contacted Tree Fruits about the site, so hopefully the clean-up will lead to more interest."
