High fives at the SOEC

Parents high-fived their kids, teens high-fived teens and complete strangers made hand contact as well at a special event at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton Friday.
The SOEC invited area residents to participate in a Guinnness World Records attempt, for the most simultaneous high-fives prior to the Penticton Vees home opener.
There was a strong turnout, but organizers said Friday, it was too early to tell if they broke the current record of 4,699 set in April in Louisville, Kentucky.
"Even if we don't get the world record, no one can fault us for not trying," said Dean Clarke, general manager and regional vice president of Global Spectrum, which manages the SOEC.
The gesture was in support of the building's five year anniversary. It also marks the fifth year of Vees' tenancy at the SOEC.
Clarke said there are a lot of reasons to celebrate on this fifth birthday.
"We have turned the corner. The SOEC has proven its economic impact on the community," he said.
Lyle Brant of Okanagan Falls said he came out because it sounded like a good time.
"We are strong, dedicated Vees fans and the high fiving sounded like fun," he said. "It will also be kind of cool if it makes it into the Guinness World Records.
While Councillor Helena Konanz said she was happy to do her part.
"I think we have learned so much about ourselves in these five years," she said. "This is an example of an unbelievable community event."
