Governor general to attend youth forum
Sep 27, 2013 / 9:30 am
Canada's Governor General will be in Penticton Monday for the launch of a youth project in the city.
David Johnston is expected to address a public forum where the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan and United Way present findings from a report focused on the needs of youth in the community.
"Youth in the community have traditionally been underserved, being a smaller population than seniors," said Aaron McRann, executive director of the foundation. "So we are trying to put a focus on their needs and fill the gap."
McRann said he proposed the idea of the governor general being part of the forum and heard word this week that he would be attending.
The foundation and United Way combined forces about a year ago to find solutions to youth issues in the city.
They then engaged a researcher to work and talk with youth in the community, and the report from that effort is now complete.
The next step, McRann said, will be more public consultation on how to better serve youth in the community.
"We want to find ways to lift them up to being productive citizens," he said.
The public forum is from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Penticton Lakeside Resort, followed by a lunch with the governor general.
The forum is free and the cost of the lunch is $30.
Reservations are required, and can be made by calling the foundation office at (250) 493-9311.
