A 'will' to give back to the community
Sep 20, 2013 / 6:44 am
The Penticton Community Centre now has a patio area adjacent to the pool, thanks to the generosity of a longtime patron.
The finishing touches were recently completed on the outdoor space, and people using the pool can step outside to relax on the patio furniture.
"The pool patio project was completely funded by our patron and community centre friend Maureen Sewell," said Chuck Loewen, general manager of recreation. "Maureen will be missed, but her support lives on in those who benefit from her kindness and generosity."
Loewen said on an annual basis, Sewell provided the recreation department with funds to re-invest into the community centre.
The money went toward equipment purchases for pool exercise and the walking program.
"She loved the recreation department and what it did for the community," said Loewen. "So she wanted to give something back."
When she died in recent years, she bequeathed funds for the department in her will and asked very specifically it be used for recreation.
Prior to that her donations had always come in anonymously.
Sewell always felt the outdoor patio would be a nice thing to have and the department felt it would be a great legacy as well, said Loewen.
"Now people can enter as a pool user, and enjoy the great outdoors," he said.
