Cougar sightings in Naramata
Sep 17, 2013 / 11:40 am
There were three reported cougar sightings in Naramata last week, according to WildSafeBC coordinator Zoe Kirk.
The sightings were on Upper Debeck Road, Arawana Road and Juniper Drive, as well as on Mill Road.
"By virtue of the time frame, we believe it is one cougar, because they can move a fair distance," she said. "Perhaps it is just travelling the creek corridor which Juniper and Arawana are on. Still we are asking people to not do things that lure bears or cougars."
Among her recommendations to avoid encounters are keeping garbage and other attractants managed, not leaving pet food on porches or balconies, keeping composters free of rodents and livestock yards well secured and clean.
Kirk also recently provided signage to Naramata Elementary School on the different species that students might see.
She will be visiting the school as well as others in interface areas, including West Bench, Kaleden and Okanagan Falls, in the weeks ahead to talk about cougars, bears and coyotes.
"i will be making the rounds," she said. "And I encourage parents to attend the assembly style presentations as well."
The cougar sightings follow on the heels of reports of bears in Naramata.
There is now a sign posted at Debeck and Juniper warning of bears in the area.
Kirk said she typically posts the signboards when there is an element of risk.
"That sign was posted because a bear got into someone's carport and ate plums," she said. "If an animal is just going up a corridor then everything is fine."
