Second phase of waterfront work starts

The second phase of work on the west Okanagan Lake waterfront in Penticton is now underway, and expected to continue until December.
Construction is from where the first phase left off in June near the Peach, to the S.S. Sicamous and includes amenities designed to improve the dated waterfront.
"We wanted to phase it to avoid disruption during the major tourist season," said Acting Mayor Wes Hopkin. "And so far it has gone very much according to plan, with a lot of support from the Waterfront Enhancement Select Committee."
This next stage of work will include construction of the four metre wide concrete walkway, landscaping, with new trees going in, and the placement of picnic tables and benches.
The walkway will look similar to how the pathway in the completed section looks.
At the last council meeting, adaptations to the plan to accommodate S.S. Sicamous park concepts were deferred pending the 2014 budget deliberations.
The project to upgrade the aging waterfront along Lakeshore Drive initially met with resistance with some residents, who were concerned about the loss of angled parking and beach area.
After much public consultation, the decision was made to keep the angled parking and focus on other upgrades that met with residents' approval.
"There was skepticism at first, but now that people are seeing what has been done, the feedback is positive," said Hopkin.
