Litke elected mayor
Sep 8, 2013 / 9:30 am
The two candidates with the most previous experience on city council were the winners in Saturday's by-election in Penticton.
Garry Litke was elected mayor, with 2,779 votes, and Katie Robinson won the vacant council seat, with 1,500 votes.
Litke, who resigned from the council to run for mayor when Dan Ashton was elected MLA for the area, said he was looking forward to being on it again.
"I am really anxious to get back to work. I felt like I was in a bit of limbo during the summer, and I really missed working with the council," he said.
His priority as mayor will be seeing the Penticton Regional Hospital expansion move ahead, he said.
"I will be going to UBCM and participating in a series of discussions on moving the hospital expansion forward," he said.
Litke most recently served as acting mayor from April to July 2013. He was a city councillor from 2006 to 2013.
Robinson, who learned the results at her Penticton home Saturday night, said she was very humbled.
"The people of Penticton are just awesome, and I am speechless," she said. "You just never know if people will remember what you did before, and people here have a long memory."
Robinson, who previously served on the council from 1990 to 1999, said one of the things she heard the loudest while running for the council seat, was people want more accessibility, and she is prepared to provide that.
Other candidates including mayoral candidates Brian Henningson and Vic Powell and those running for council: Lynn Kelsey, Andre Martin and Patrick Buchanan joined Litke at the Seniors' Drop-In Centre in Penticton to hear results.
Although it is too early to know what exactly the voter turnout was, Simone Blais, the city's communications officer, said it was a good day at the polling station, that was held at the drop-in centre.
"We were busy all day," she said. "We were surprised by how many people came through."
